Süsse Labortechnik – your partner for the laboratory and pathology

Süsse Labortechnik supplies laboratories, pathology departments and institutes with what is needed there every day: sample containers and mailing containers, microscope slides and cover glasses, safety packaging for the transport of diagnostic samples, consumables and laboratory equipment. We develop and manufacture a large part of that ourselves – in Gudensberg, near Kassel.

What sets us apart from a mail-order house is our size: 20 people who know their customers. You do not reach a queue here – you reach the person handling your order.

A family business in its second generation

Fred Krollpfeiffer sen. took over the company in 1986. In 2014 he handed it to his daughter Sandra Krollpfeiffer and his son Fred Krollpfeiffer jr., who run it together today. Decisions are made here, on site – and usually on the same day.

Our history

The history of this company is at the same time the history of a single task: packing a sample so that it arrives. What was a glass tube with a cork in a wooden box in 1917 is BAM-certified safety packaging today.

1901 – The beginning

Founded as a new laboratory technology department at Wachenfeld & Schwarzschild by the “Königlicher Kaufmann” (royal merchant) Heinrich Süsse.

1910 – Beyond Kassel

Süsse becomes a supplier and partner to the leading universities, hygiene institutes and public medical examination offices. Two new branches open, in Berlin and Breslau. Together with universities, the classic “mailing container for human specimens” comes into being.

1917 – The sample goes by post

A cooperation agreement with the Deutsche Reichspost for sending medical specimens. At this time the complete mailing system consists of a glass sample container with a cork, a protective sleeve of light metal and a sturdy wooden box.

1939 to 1952 – Süsse und Schmidt KG

In 1939 the company is officially registered as “Süsse und Schmidt KG”. In 1952 his son Erich Süsse takes over, with the head office in Kassel and a branch in Munich. Alongside the traditional division for mailing containers, laboratory supplies and laboratory instruments comes a metal division, producing among other things the “Dampftopf nach Koch” steam steriliser.

1986 – From glass to plastic

Fred Krollpfeiffer takes over the company and sets the course early for the production of plastic articles. The classic mailing system of glass tube, metal sleeve and wooden box is now made entirely from plastic: protective containers in standard and special sizes to DIN EN 829, with the matching sample containers.

2003 – The Süsse Post Box

New postal regulations for sending infectious substances as a letter lead to the development of the Süsse Post Box: BAM-certified safety packaging for diagnostic samples and biological substances of Class 6.2 (UN 3373), to packing instruction P650 – approved for road, rail and air.

2004 – Microscope slides and cover glasses

The glass division grows to take in the production of microscope slides and cover glasses. It has been extended continuously ever since and is a fixed part of the range to this day.

2006 – One system, three sizes

The Süsse Post Box is available in three versions and sizes. That makes the complete system for sending medical specimens – sample container and protective container in plastic, plus the safety packaging – one of our main products.

2010 – 3,000 m² of roof become a power station

A photovoltaic system is installed across the entire building roof. The beginning of a direction we are still following today.

2014 – The next generation

Fred Krollpfeiffer sen. steps back from the day-to-day business and hands the company to Sandra Krollpfeiffer and Fred Krollpfeiffer jr.

2016 to 2020 – A wider range, more automation

In 2016 a fully automatic formalin filling line goes into operation, to meet the high demand from histology and pathology. In 2018 the dangerous goods range grows: the Süsse Postbox UN 3373 becomes available in many further sizes. In 2020 the expansion of the range reaches a peak – around 2,000 new products, among them the Liquid Transport Swabs product line, for which we hold the sole distribution rights in Germany.

2021 to 2023 – Sustainability as a direction, not a campaign

Packaging and dispatch are switched entirely to cardboard and paper made from recycled material. Our protective bags are awarded the Blue Angel ecolabel. Storage space grows from around 1,700 m² to 3,500 m², with some 4,000 pallet spaces. And for the first time, protective containers made from recycled material enter the product catalogue.

More than 125 years, two generations, one site. We do not just supply laboratory products – we supply the certainty that what you send arrives.
